Nature Poems

The Earth Breathes

Aircraft sit grounded on runways,
Fewer travel by train, bus or car
As industries grind to a halt,
Harmful emissions reduce by far
And the Earth breathes...

No holidaymakers take to the beach
Their rubbish swept out to sea
Parks and playgrounds clear of human debris
Nature and wildlife roam free
And the Earth breathes...

Everyone tends to their gardens
Pruning and planting away
The soil is enriched; the insects will come
Bringing life to another day
And the Earth breathes...

The streets are cleaner, quieter, safer
We know all our neighbours’ names
Families unite in comfy togetherness
Rediscovering favourite games
And the Earth breathes...

A note from a random stranger,
A street united in clap and cheer
A new wave of kindness, respect and love
As we hold our loved ones dear
And the Earth breathes...

As nature carries on regardless
Simple pleasures bring us delight:
The blossoming trees,
A gentle spring breeze,
The warmth of the sun burning bright
And the Earth breathes...

The promise of summer is near
Birds singing in cleaner, blue skies
Renewed and recharged, we’ll never forget
The World’s beauty in front of our eyes
And the Earth breathes...

The Heath

Up the bracken edged path
And through the creaky gate
The dogs excitedly wait
To come into my world.

Folk come to hear and spot birds
To enjoy their chimes
To crunch through frost and snow
Or just sit and ponder time.

They come to climb my yew tree
To hide amongst my fern
To forage for magical toadstools
To find a fairy beneath, they yearn.

They build dens and camp fires
Gathering woods and twigs from my trees
They make clay pots from my mud bath
And enjoy the simple, cool breeze.

Nowadays, not so many come
Up the bracken edged path.
They no longer keenly wait
At the creaky latched gate.

Too many souls abused my beauty you see.
As dogs free roamed eagerly
Trampling the fungi that clung to life
Disturbing the birds that nest in my arms.
Through the winter months
All remains calm.

No more beings through the creaky latched gate.
Nature can rest, take a breath, pause and wait.

Here she comes!

Oh, here she comes!
With her light and her warmth.
Her soft, gentle breeze
Begins to tease.
A Siren of the sun -
The beckoning has begun.
Flowers start to bloom
Removing the gloom
Of the cold, dark enemy that came before her.

She brings a sense of hope and promise
As nature gifts new life.
Welcome rain helps to nourish
Blossom and bulbs begin to flourish.
She shares in the sweet birdsong -
Fledglings flustering, with a whistling chirrup
Industrious bees buzz and bustle
Paths carpeted with yellow daffodils
Their trumpets perfectly poised.

As she hands the baton to her reliable friend
Who promises long evenings that never end
Who rises majestically with a scorching glow
A phenomenal Phoenix, her haunting melody to bestow.
This seasoned chum
Brings a brighter, more fierce sun.
With folk toiling and mowing
And shrubs relentlessly growing
She brings people together
In a frisky abandon of garments and detritus
Feeding the greedy, gossiping gulls.

Unexpectedly, the evenings darken.
There’s a sudden chill in the air.
The Thunderbird arrives to commands our skies
Bringing gusts and gales with their howls and their cries.
She brings with her a lush new palette
Of red, orange, brown and yellow
As the world sets to work to prepare for its foe.
Squirrels hustle
Leaves fall and rustle
Laying a colourful blanket over our Earth.
Beaks and paws gather twigs, fruit and nuts
And our feathered friends swarm off to warmer climes
While others build shelter and bide their time.

Then all too quickly she emerges.
A monochrome, ethereal creature
Her icy heart turning everything white and dark.
This graceful Griffin swoops in
And claims the land with her frosty claws
Her unrelenting strength destroying all in her path.
The World takes cover.
And waits for the freezing onslaught to be over.

A Place Without Darkness

There’s a place that I visit when the world is dark
When the fog befalls me, the way forward unmarked.
A place of blue sky, where the sun always shines
Where the flowers smell sweet and the blackbird’s song chimes.
Where there’s always sweet music and no angry words
The only gossip is that of the chattering birds.
A place full of laughter, of smiles and good cheer
With all that you love and all those you hold dear.
A simple place, uncluttered by greed
All colours embraced, a love for each creed.
A place with no violence, no suffering, pain,
No perilous fighting for meaningless gain.
A place of no hatred, no sadness, no grief
But one of kindness, compassion, hope and belief.
The clouds are hidden and the path is clear
There’s no one to hurt you and nothing to fear.
A place without darkness, no empty desire
A place in which to live I aspire.
